Cinderella Castle Dream Lights in blue and purple at night

Cinderella Castle Won’t Be Covered In Ice This Year – Here’s Why!

If you have visited Disney World at Christmastime in the past few years, you probably saw Cinderella’s Castle in the Magic Kingdom light up with hundreds of thousands of light blue lights – transforming the park’s icon into an ice castle.

In the past, this transformation would happen nightly, starting just after Halloween.  Elsa along with Anna and Olaf performed a short castle stage show called A Frozen Holiday Wish during which Elsa turned Cinderella Castle into a beautiful ice castle like the one from Frozen.

But like other things, 2020 is a bit different.  Disney decided to do something a little different this year!

Cinderella Castle won't be an Ice Castle this year. Instead, Disney created four Christmas-themed overlays!
Cinderella Castle won’t be an Ice Castle this year. Instead, Disney created four Christmas-themed overlays created with projection mappings!

This year, there won’t be an ice castle, but instead, there will be four different holiday overlays using Disney’s signature projection technology. The four overlay themes include a Christmas sweater, traditional red and green with a touch of gold, a jeweled Christmas ornament with dark blue and gold filigree, and peppermint sticks and polka dots. These overlays play in a loop with each one lasting about 15 minutes. You’ll even notice that the trees and fountains around the hub are decorated with Christmas lights that change in synchrony with the castle projections!

Why the change this year?  Officially, Disney says they wanted to do something special and make the castle more than just pretty lights.

It is also possible that, with the Coronavirus shutdown, Disney didn’t have time to die the light cords to match the new paint color of the castle.

Even in these unusual times, Disney is still providing plenty of magic for guests visiting this holiday season!

Do you enjoy the Castle’s new Christmas overlays? Miss the Frozen lights?
