I am always on the lookout for fun and delicious food at Disney World. Yes, I like the occasional hamburger or chicken nugget as much as the next tourist. But I think that Disney has worked really hard to offer a whole world of dining options. And I want to check out the results of their efforts!
I think that quick service offerings at the Magic Kingdom have improved over time, with some great seafood and chicken offerings at the Columbia Harbor House in Liberty Square and the amazing Be Our Guest restaurant in Fantasyland. And the toppings bar at Pecos Bill’s in Frontierland is not to be missed.
Still, the quick service restaurants at the Magic Kingdom can be very busy. And sometimes folks want a break from the constant activity in the park.
The good news is that there is a fun quick service restaurant in Disney’s Contemporary Resort – just a short monorail ride or walk from the gates of the Magic Kingdom. The Contempo Café is a great escape with some nice food offerings.
Let’s take a look.
Atmosphere
The feel of the Contempo Café matches that of the Contemporary Resort itself. If you haven’t guessed the theme, well, it’s contemporary. The Café is located in the Grand Canyon Concourse, where you can admire the soaring open hotel and can watch as monorails glide by.
The Café presents its menu on large TV monitors that show different view of your food choices. Options include:
- Flatbreads: marinated beef, chicken and artichoke, and pepperoni)
- Tossed salads: steakhouse, chicken, curry vegetable, Caesar
- Cold sandwiches: Italian, turkey
- Hot sandwiches: angus bacon cheeseburger, spice-crusted mahi, grilled chicken, and smoked turkey.
When you are ready to order, you step up to computerized self-service kiosks to enter what you want to eat.
Pick up some pastries (like a coconut cupcake) and bottled drinks (or wait for the soft drink and coffee self-serve area), and then head to the cash registers to pay for your meal and get a beeper. In a few minutes the beeper will go off and you can pick up your food.
One of my favorite food items in all of Walt Disney World is the Marinated Beef Flat Bread. It starts with a thin pizza crust and is topped with a creamy white sauce, caramelized onions, cooked tomatoes, and small tender pieces of beef. It is topped with handful fresh baby spinach, which makes the dish healthy – and perhaps justifies picking up something fun from the pastry case.
In a word it is delicious.
