Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is one of the most popular rides in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, and it almost always has a long wait-time even though it is a slow-moving ride. The thrill on this ride comes in the competitive game of defeating Zurg.
Even if you don’t have a competitive nature, you’ll probably still love this ride. If you are competitive, you’ll likely want to get as many points as possible even if only for bragging rights. Here are some tips to help you max out your score on this shooting-gallery game.
1. Hold; Don’t click
Every time I ride this, my thumb is so tired by the end of the ride from the continuous clicking required to rack up the points, so I wondered: “Is there a better way?”
Indeed, there is! By holding down the button on the laser gun, you’ll save your thumb some serious agitation. This may be difficult for young children since it does require some pressure, so forgo your own point pursuit and assist young space rangers.
2. Aim for high-point targets
There are high-point targets in each room. Knowing where to find each target and hitting that target (more than once) will significantly increase your final score.
Room 1’s target is on the farthest left arm of the robot. It is worth 100,000 points.
The top spot on the volcano in Room 2 is worth anywhere from 25,000 to 50,000 points.
Room 3 offers a high-point target of 100,000 points at the bottom of Zurg’s spaceship.
The speed tunnel at the end of the ride is also home to a 100,000 point target. The illusive Black Box is situated on either side of the exit where the spaceship animation starts and moves to the other side. If you can find this target, keep your aim steady and fire away.
3. Take what you can get
If you can’t find or can’t hit the high-point targets, hit whatever you can. Spend a few seconds trying to hit the big point getters then take the targets of opportunity. These are usually close to you and easy to hit. Hitting a 10,000-point target six times is better than hitting a 50,000-point target once.
Sometimes the motion function isn’t working on the robot. If the robot isn’t moving, and the arm is stuck in the downward position, don’t even waste your time trying to hit it; the laser gun doesn’t reach that far down.
4. Take advantage of ride stops
Just because the ride stops doesn’t mean your gun stops working. If you’re on a high-point target, keep your aim steady and keep shooting. Otherwise, hit what you can. If the ride is stopped for any amount of time, it will be much easier to steady your laser gun and aim.
5. Use the rotator on the spaceship
When you enter a room, you should be facing forward; likewise, leave the room facing backward.
