Did you know that Mickey wasn’t Walt Disney’s first creation? Oswald the Lucky Rabbit debuted first, but he was legally owned by Universal Studios. When Disney asked for more money to support his growing cartoon business, Universal refused, insisted on taking full ownership of Oswald, and contracted many of Disney’s employees.
After his meeting with Universal, he was disappointed but not deterred. While on a train back to Chicago with his wife Lillian, Walt began sketching a new character to which he was determined to retain rights. He showed Lillian his sketch and said, “Mortimer!” Lillian, a supportive wife but intelligent woman, liked the sketch but suggested that Mortimer the Mouse was not a welcoming name and told Walt to pick a friendlier name. “Mickey Mouse” was born.
Through the years, Mickey has changed quite a bit from his rabbit predecessor to the black and white character in Steamboat Willie, to the colorful mouse we know today. Mickey has always been cool, but when Disney artists created Cool Mickey designs with contemporaries in mind, he became even cooler!
