On December 31, 2011, during the ABC New Years Eve broadcast (gotta love the synergy!), Disney announced a new, short-term promotion for Disney parks.

Disney Announces One More Disney Day Sweepstakes For Leap Day

Instead of the often-used themes of ‘celebration’ or ‘memories’, I was pleased to hear that they are introducing something a little different.  This promotion they announced is called “One More Disney Day” and it celebrates Leap Day on February 29.

Disney is doing two special things for the promotion.

1 – Disney Vacation Sweepstakes

First, on each day from January 1 to February 29, 2012 they are giving away a 5-day Disney vacation.  You can enter every day on the Disney web site here:

Link no longer valid.

Fortunately it is easy to enter if you already have a Disney Account ID – you just need to enter your pre-registered e-mail address and password and you are in.  If you don’t have a Disney Account ID it is quick and free to get one by clicking “sign up” from the Disney home page.

You can also enter by sending the text message of DISNEYDAY to 347639. Standard disclaimer –remember that data and usage charges from your mobile phone provider may apply.

The sweepstakes is open to residents of United States, D.C. or Canada (and curiously they are excluding Quebec – maybe a legal thing?).

2 – Park open for 24 hours straight

Second, the Magic Kingdom park will be open for 24 hours straight from 6 am on February 29 until 6 am on March 1, 2012.  I’ve got to imagine there will be a few logistical challenges to making that happen – after all, they won’t have time to cut the grass at night or power wash the streets at night.  And, staffing a full 24 hours will be something new.  But, it is just for one day, and just one park in Florida.

The Chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts, Tom Staggs, said that the current promotion called “Let The Memories Begin” will continue into 2012.  But I wonder for how long?  Since this is a very short term promotion, lasting just two months, it will be interesting to see what if anything Disney does come March.  Will they just keep the well-worn “Let The Memories Begin” tagline going, or is this part of a master plan to provide a short-term promotion before something new and different comes along?

Stay tuned, and be sure to submit your entries in to the sweepstakes.
