Epcot’s Mission: Space officially opened on October 9, 2003. It is located in Future World and gives riders a simulated space launch experience.
Riders enter the “International Space Training Center” as trainees, and are split up into teams of four with each rider assigned a job: navigator, pilot, commander, or engineer. This basically means that you have to push a button when prompted, but unexpected difficulties arise throughout the ride to create drama.
The reality of Mission: Space Orange Team is achieved through a multiple-arm centrifuge, which allows riders to experience acceleration up to 2.5 G-Forces, twice the gravity experienced on Earth. The ride capsule actually only spins and tilts to simulate the acceleration and does not actually fly through the air. NASA Astronauts who consulted on the construction of the ride say that this is the closest simulation they’ve ever experienced to what it is actually like to launch into space.
In 2006, Disney added a Green Team simulator that does not spin but still tilts riders since many people experienced extreme motion sickness.
