The Barnstormer ride originally opened on October 1, 1996, as part of Mickey’s Toontown Fair. The ride vehicles were airplanes, and Goofy taught riders how to fly. When Disney decided to renovate Fantasyland, this ride shut down on February 12, 2011, and was re-themed to fit the New Fantasyland and particularly the Storybook Circus area.
The new Barnstormer ride features the Great Goofini in this thrilling ride aimed specifically at little Disney fans. It opened with the first phase of Storybook Circus in early 2012 and is situated next to Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride. This junior rollercoaster is a short ride with small drops for riders over 35” tall.
The cars are pretty small, but most parents will be able to ride in the same car with their child. If you have a child that is too short to ride, you can use Rider Switch to ride with another child while the other parent waits. However, this ride is not recommended for expectant mothers or those with neck or back issues.
The ride itself has two trains with eight cars each. Each car can seat up to two people for a total of 16 people per train and 32 people per ride. The ride begins with a 30-foot chain lift hill climb then proceeds to twist and turn up and down small hills and valleys reaching a top speed of 25 miles per hour. The ride is a total of one-minute long, so if your child totally hates the ride, the fear won’t last long. On the other hand, if they love it, they may be begging to ride it over and over again.
FastPass+ is available for this ride, but you probably won’t need it if you plan to ride early in the morning. However, if you decide to wait until the afternoon hours, a FP+ might be the way to go since the wait times can vary dramatically throughout the day. A morning wait time might be 10 to 15 minutes, but this time can easily triple or more in the afternoon time.
