Disney Roundup

Disney World news, reviews, and information that will keep up up to speed on the latest happenings in Florida and around the Disney Universe.

  • The Worlds Most Popular Theme Parks
In the world of theme parks, Disney rules the worldwide roost. Of course, Disney gave birth to the very first modern theme park when Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California in 1955. Since that time, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts – a subset of the Walt Disney Company – has continued to grow its worldwide theme park presence, and currently gobbles up a massive percentage of the market share.
  • Disney World And The Art Of The Nap
Given the prices of park entry passes at Walt Disney World, it’s tempting to attack the theme parks at full speed and keep going until you pass out in bed as soon as the last firework has exploded. However, visitors escorting young children are often forced to take an extended midday break to allow the little ones to sleep, cool down, and clear their brains after theme park sensory overload. As you sit in your resort room with the minutes ticking by, it’s easy to feel as though your money is slipping away at the same time.
  • The Small (and Shrinking) Details of Main Street, U.S.A.
Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom represents an idealized turn-of-the-century town square. Inspired by Walt Disney’ own memories of growing up in small town America, the street is a tribute to optimism and community, nostalgia and progress. It has many terrific details that support the stories of the place, but sadly some of those details are disappearing.
  • Creating the Cast of the Carousel of Progress
The Carousel of Progress is one of my favorite attractions. It is an audio animatronic show in a revolving theatre, set amid the futuristic spires of Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland. The show was designed by Walt Disney himself for the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, after which it spent seven years at Disneyland Park in California. Shortly after the opening of Magic Kingdom, the entire show was transported to Florida, where it has lived ever since.
  • Whatever Happened to the Equatorial Africa Pavilion?
The World Showcase at Disney World’s Epcot theme park opened in 1982 with pavilions dedicated to nine countries from across the globe. The countries represented three continents, but the large continent of Africa was conspicuously absent. Nevertheless, the World Showcase left room for several additional pavilions, and an area dedicated to the countries of Equatorial Africa was already in its conceptual stages by the time Epcot snipped its opening ribbon.
  • Disney World: New Fantasyland Timelines - And More
Walt Disney World has officially announced a wave of new features coming to the resort, most notably the attractions in the new Fantasyland. Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom has been in the process of undergoing its largest-ever expansion, one that has doubled the size of this popular area. Disney has now released some confirmed dates for the expansion’s opening, as well as news about a few other bits and pieces around the theme parks and resort.
  • Express Yourself with Disney Typography
Florida native Justin Callaghan has made it possible for fellow Disney fans to express themselves in writing in unmistakable Disney style. Callaghan is a graphic designer and typographer who has created a series of fonts inspired by the Walt Disney logo as well as classic signage from around Disney World.
  • Great Restaurants At Disney World For Celebrations
Many people plan trips to Disney World to celebration special events – everything from a birthday to a graduation, from a family reunion to, yes, winning the Super Bowl. And with celebrations often come special dinners. Fortunately, Disney has plenty of terrific restaurants for celebrating special events. Here are some of my favorites, organized based on the particular event you want to celebrate.
  • If You Love Horses, You Will Love Disney’s Fort Wilderness
Disney’s Fort Wilderness is just a few miles away from the hustle and bustle of the Magic Kingdom. In fact, it is just a short boat or bus ride away. But Fort Wilderness feels like it is far away from the crowds and miles of concrete that make up the busiest theme park in the world. Fort Wilderness is forested and generally quiet. It feels like the great outdoors. And if you like horses, you will love Fort Wilderness.
  • Mickey Track – Disney’s Computerized Parade Control System
If you have ever been to Walt Disney World, you have probably been delighted by the parades that march down the Main Street USA in the Magic Kingdom or wind around the streets of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The parades are a joy to watch, but they are also a marvel of technology. While the technology is well hidden behind the scenes, it is critical to the magical form of entertainment that Disney does like no other – a Disney parade.
  • Interesting Facts About The Disney Monorails
When you ask people to think about Walt Disney World, they typically think about Cinderella Castle. But what comes to mind next? Usually it is the monorail. he Disney World monorail literally transports you away from the real world of your car and the outside world to a different, magical place where fun and fantasy reign.
  • Overlooked Treasures At Disney World
Whether you are visiting Disney World for the first time or the hundredth time, if you are like most folks you rush from major attraction to major attraction – taking in the “E ticket” draws like Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom or Soarin at Epcot Disney has a huge array of attractions to offer. Some aren’t as popular as others, but they are still worth seeing. Let’s take a look at some of the overlooked treasures at Disney World – easily missed but definitely worth seeking out.
  • The Meaning Behind The Haunted Mansion Tombstones
Attention Haunted Mansion fans: Have you ever noticed the small family plot of tombstones that sits near the entrance to the Haunted Mansion. The inscription on each tombstone is funny, but did you know that each of the 13 tombstones actually honors a Disney employee who contributed to the development of the Haunted Mansion? Let’s take a look at each of the people behind the tombstones – their contributions to Disney and their tombstone tribute.
